After the gloom and doom of the previous years, the HDD industry has enjoyed a remarkable recovery since CQ4, 2009.

It is in the midst of this revival that DISKCON Asia Pacific 2010 kicked off with much anticipation and optimism. The theme of the conference, "Data Storage: Back to the Future" is appropriate as 2 years ago, it seems the HDD industry was on the crest of a boom. Now amid much optimism, are the good times back again?

The conference kicked off on 8 March 2010, Monday in Bangkok followed by Singapore on 11 March 2010,Thursday and in Suzhou the following Monday, 15 March 2010. All 3 events were well attended with 150-160 participants each.

As always the conference was anchored by our regular panel of distinguished analysts, Mark Geenen (Trend Focus), John Rydning/Dave Reinsel, (IDC), Thomas M. Coughlin (Coughlin Associates), Matt Bryson (Avian Securities) and John Monroe (Gartner). The general view was that the HDD industry is on the uptake and things look rosy in the foreseeable future. However this will be very dependent on the state of the economic recovery.

The analysts' panel was very popular and had a lively round of discussion on the impact of SSD. We are now viewing SSD more as a complementary technology rather than a competing technology. There was also interests and questions on the performance of the stock prices of the HDD companies.

The afternoon sessions covered the  development in HDD related technology and provided insights to the more technically inclined audience. Among the speakers were K.C. Ee (Magnecomp Precision Technology), Ryan Schmidt/Mike Lerdal (Intriplex), Dean Dawson/He Huang (Veeco), Lee Soon Swee (Pall Filtration) and Harry Cho (Park Systems). The sessions were ably chaired and moderated by Dale Schudel/Tom Coughlin (Bangkok), Chan Leng Wai/Tom Coughlin (Singapore), Chan Leng Wai/Hank Pselos (Suzhou).

Besides the conference presentations, there were exhibition booths/ table tops for companies to display their products. Unfortunately, there was a significant drop in the numbers of exhibitors in Singapore. The conference also provided the platform for participants to network and share updates.

In concluding, we wish to once again express our appreciation to our speakers, sponsors, exhibitors and participants for making DISKCON Asia Pacific 2010 a major success. Special thanks to those who toil tirelessly behind the scene: our respective country chairmen (Dale Schudel, S.C. Lee, Tan Leong Hooi), Daowadee, Pornpan, P.S. Ng, Janey Qin, Shirley Ng, Tay Yu Jin, Irene Ng and countless others who have contributed in one way or another to make this a smooth and successful conference.

Thank you
