Cerebral
palsy might have affected him physically, but Liu
Yang never let that limit him. The 15-year-old, who
could not even crawl when at age three he began
rehabilitative treatments, today expresses his
creativity through art.
His work was among those
auctioned at a IDEMA China supported event that
raised more than RMB 1 million to support the Boai
School (http://www.jsboai.com.cn/home.asp),
a non–profit school for disabled children;
Liu is among the numerous
children who have received education and treatment
from Boai School.
The school, which serves about 50 students
presently, was established in 1998 to help disabled
children by providing medical care, education,
accommodation and rehabilitative. The school’s goal
is that, through treatment and care, the children
develop the ability to live a life independently.
After eleven years of operations,
the school needed a variety of repairs. One of the
most critical needs, was to rebuild a pool used for
water therapy, which is one of the school’s main
therapeutic tools.
IDEMA China (The International
Disk Drive Equipment and Materials Association),
along with 80 companies, including Seagate, held a
charity golf tournament and a charity auction in
late October that raised RMB1.2 million (equivalent
to about $175,000) for repairs and reconstruction of
the pool.
“These
children may have special needs, but just like other
children, they too have dreams and ambitions,” said
Tan Leong Hooi, Chairman
of IDEMA China and Seagate’s Vice president of Wuxi
Operations.
“It is heartwarming to know we might have had
a small part to play in helping them realize their
dreams,” he said. Among the items auctioned was an
art piece done by Liu. “I spent two days
concentrating on this art piece for the auction. It
was hard work, but worthwhile because we now have a
new water therapy pool. I like the water,” he said.
